The Inspiration To Be A Fencer

Alvin’s interest in fencing began from watching lightsabre duels in Star Wars and swordfight scenes in Lord of the Rings.

He started fencing in 2002, and in the following 20 years, has evolved into a fencing coach-athlete.  He is incredibly lucky to have been able to work with some of the best foil fencing coaches in Singapore during his competitive years. These include Ms. Teo Ah Heok, and former national foil coaches Mr. Wang Weimin and Mr. Simon Senft. Today he is a nationally accredited NROC fencing coach by Sports SG.

His foray into fencing coaching stems from his desire to encourage young athletes to develop a lifelong passion and love for the sport. As an accredited member of the Singapore National Registry Of Coaches (NROC), he is able to instruct in fencing at any MOE schools and institutes of higher learning (NREP | Coach Details (activesgcircle.gov.sg)).

Today he is tri-certified fencing coach in Singapore (NROC), Australia (AFF) and France (French Fencing Masters Academy, Academie d’Armes de France).

As a competitive fencer, Alvin has established track record of achievement at national, regional and international tournaments. He has numerous awards under his belt and to date has won more than 50 fencing medals. He has medaled in every major national ranking (senior men’s foil) tournament (National Fencing Championships, FS Challenge Cup, Fencing Singapore International, Pesta Sukan Fencing Championships).

In 2018, he come out of a 5 years retirement from the national team and got selected into the Singapore national team (mens foil senior) for the second time. As a special personal milestone, he become the first and the only male veteran fencer to qualify into Singapore national senior men’s foil team. His personal best results include Gold/triple medalist at the prestigious North American Cup including finishing top 8 in Men’s foil Division II (USA).  Today, he stands as one of Singapore’s most successful veteran foil fencers and is now focusing on coaching and bringing the best out of his students.
